Famous New Year's Quotes

Today's the first day of the rest of your life. That's so cliche, but then again, the New Year is always filled with cliches, traditions and superstitions. That first sentence, though it's certainly not my an original phrase, is so true.

While some people might spend the day sobering up from last night's celebrations, eating greens and black-eyed peas or anything "ring-shaped" for good luck, or popping fireworks, today really is a day for reflection and, most importantly, renewal and a fresh start -- a beginning. The following are a few notable New Year's quotes to share:

  1. "Every man/woman should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up or let out one hole more in the buckle if necessary according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man/woman gird himself once more, with his/her face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past." -Henry Ward Beecher

  2. "The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!" -Edward Payson Powell

  3. "An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves." -Bill Vaughan (Which did you do, if either?)

  4. "Each age has deemed the new-born year the fittest time for festal cheer." -Sir Walter Scott

  5. "No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam." -Charles Lamb

  6. "I do think New Year's resolutions can't technically be expected to begin on New Year's Day, don't you? Since it's an extension of New Year's Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second." -Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones's Diary (No offense to non-smokers, non-drinkers and those who do not overeat, please.)

A few favorites:

  1. "I will seek elegance rather than luxury; refinement rather than fashion. I will seek to be worthy more than respectable; wealthy and not rich. I will study hard, think quietly, talk gently and act frankly. I will listen to stars and birds, and babes and sages with an open heart. I will bear all things cheerfully, do all things bravely, await occasions and hurry never. In a word I will let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common." - William Ellery Channing

  2. "Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time. ... Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. ... Vow not to make a promise you don't think you can keep. ... Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look 10 years younger. Don't be afraid to say, "I love you". Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world." - Ann Landers

  3. "Resolve to make at least one person happy every day, and then in ten years you may have made three thousand, six hundred and fifty persons happy, or brightened a small town by your contribution to the fund of general enjoyment." - Sydney Smith

  4. "Your Merry Christmas may depend on what others do for you ... but your Happy New Year depends on what you do for others." - Unknown
